Sad State of America and Citizens

I have always been fascinated with travel, different cultures and how other people lived in their part of the world. My father fought in WWII and described the areas in Europe he had been deployed to, focusing more on the architecture and citizens he encountered and less on the horrors of war. This only fanned the flame of desire to experience different walks of life. He always taught me to be respectful, be knowledgeable of the way that culture lives and manners, manners, manners because after all, I’m a guest on their homeland.

Sadly, I’ve only acquired one stamp in my passport, but I’ve never given up my desires and hopes to travel abroad. I want to experience the world, not as a tourist going to the trendy shops and attractions, but the small “Mom & Pop” eateries, stores and street markets. I want to listen to the local stories told by the older generations that are passed down to the youth. I want to hear how couples met, fell in love, spent their lives together. I want to hear what is important to them in this life.

I’m a true believer that if we actually listened to others with an open mind, we could achieve so much in our lives and offer valuable enrichment to not only ourselves, but those around us.

Unfortunately, so many “entitled” Americans do not have this mentality, respect or morals and have disrespected so many cultures in other countries, that we have earned a bad reputation. The idea that the world revolves around one person and that person should be given anything they desire, should be treated the way they deem, especially in a different part of the world is selfish, childish and in my opinion, should have their passports revoked. According to social media platforms, I see where people dread seeing and encountering American tourists, and many of the things I want to experience may not be available anymore. The trust is lost and the opportunity to listen to the history and stories of lovely families are not as readily shared.

I’m not saying all Americans behave in such a rude manner. I am not the only one who respects how others live and wants to be a part of it. There are still human beings with morals, manners and humanity. I hope that by the time I’m able to travel to some of these amazing countries, the pendulum will have swung to the other end of the spectrum and kindness, sharing and listening will be back in popular play.

Blessings to you!
